Wedding gifts are given at the wedding and shower gifts are given at the shower. Generally, wedding guests who do not attend the bridal shower will bring a gift to the wedding. Wedding gifts are just these little surprises like wedding favors that never fit into the budget. This unique predicament of too many weddings and not enough money coupled with an innate desire to give great gifts has forced some to become truly resourceful.

Wedding gifts are many in number and no one type is the most popular. Wedding gifts are not merely gifts which are given just because it is expected of you. You should aim to try and say something with the gift, especially if the couple is someone who is close to you or someone in your family that you love. Wedding gifts are for both, bride and groom. It is easier for the couple to send or leave the gift at the bride’s house or you can bring it to the wedding.

The bride and groom have just enjoyed a series of parties and, undoubtedly, have received everything under the sun for their home, their personal use, and more. Wedding gifts are something your people will never forget. If you like to present them gifts that refer to all sessions, you can select a promised new family tree, as an example.

Wedding gifts are optional and should never be expected. Still, since bridal showers were created to “shower” the bride with gifts, guests attending your gathering will most likely bring a present. Wedding gifts can be given to the couple as soon as guests receive their invitation. Guests should not feel as though they must stick to a registry list, and in fact, the places where the couple is registered should never be listed on the wedding invitation, as it seems presumptuous.

Wedding gifts can be also very romantic. To be allocated on a background of others it is possible, having presented a newly married couple some wedding favors . Wedding gifts can be so typical and sometimes quite boring. Many newlyweds open their gifts and end up taking back half of what they received, since they may have received duplicates of the item on the registry or is not what they expected. Most couples register at department stores or online for items such as china, glassware, special cooking utensils, and so on.

Wedding gifts can be almost any household item. They can also be personal items for either the bride or groom. Wedding gifts can be one of the easiest gifts to buy for as many people organize their own wedding list. If you encounter the rare occasion where you have free reign over what to buy the bride and groom where do you start? You probably never thought of giving ice wine as a gift. Giving personalized wedding gifts is a very thoughtful way to give the bride and groom something to always remind them of their momentous day. Wedding gifts can be tax-efficient as well as generous!

Are you a mother looking to get your child piano lessons? Maybe you took them as a child as well, but stopped as you got older. Or maybe you always wanted to learn the piano and never got the chance. The good news is that helping your child learn how to play the piano can actually help you learn the instrument as well.

The most important thing to do is to participate. Passively watching your child practice or just listening while you do the laundry isn’t going to teach you anything. Though you may enjoy hearing your little one gradually progress in skill, without participation you’ll be the frustrated non-musician that you’ve always been. It’s time to step up, sit down and practice right alongside your child.

When your child’s instructor is around, ask questions. Throw your mind into the lessons as though they were your own. If you don’t understand a particular exercise, ask the teacher to explain it again. Your child might need to hear it again too, but might be afraid to ask. Ask about different composers and music pieces so that you understand the theories behind the music. The piano is a huge instrument, able to reproduce an unsurpassed variety of sounds, so ask investigative questions.

Practice alongside your child. By doing exercises on the piano together, you’ll bond over the newfound skill you’ve developed. You’ll strengthen the muscles in your hands and fire up unused synapses in your brain. When you’ve gained some skill and knowledge of a few pieces, play together. It’s a joy to be able to play a piano duet besides Heart and Soul.

By participating in your child’s instrumental development, you’ll know when they’re ready to be challenged. Consult with the teacher and discuss your child’s readiness. Hopefully you’ll be ready to be challenged as well. Don’t push yourself too hard, though. If you feel pain in your hands or wrists, see a doctor.

You’ll be gaining both technical skill and musical knowledge. You might find yourself exploring the classical section of your local bookstore with a new interest. If you only know Claire de Lune by Claude Debussy, you might suddenly be interest in the rest of the Suite Bergamasgue. Warm up your hands before attempting the Menuet at full speed to avoid injury.

Maybe you’ll hear jazz pianists in a new way once you’ve begun to understand what they’re playing. Or you’ll hear the Beatles Eleanor Rigby and notice the shifts between E Aeolian and E Dorian in the melody. When you start hearing music in a different light, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without playing the piano.

Remember that your child will probably learn the instrument much easier than you. The empty vessel of childhood is a blessing in this area, so don’t feel bad. Just learn to play for your own enjoyment. Find piano pieces that interest you and play them for your ears only. Of course, if you’re a bit of a showboat, you can always sit down at the bench at a party and impress your guests. Keep participating in your child’s learning and you’ll find yourself a new avenue of expression.

Introduction

Taking down old buildings and replacing them with new is a process that has been going on for thousands of years. The destruction of buildings might have occurred during battles or attacks on towns; or due to natural disturbances such as earthquakes or volcanic activity. The resultant ruins would need to be removed and rebuilt. So the idea of demolition would have come about where a population wished to re-inhabit a specific area or site. (One famous example is the Holy Temple in Jerusalem which was deliberately destroyed by the Assyrians around 586 BCE. After 50 years of occupation the Jews returned to Jerusalem and began the re-construction of the second temple which took seventy years to complete.)

However the actual word to demolish only came into being in 1570, and was used from then on to mean the deliberate taking down or destroying of a building or structure.

Preserving the past - preparing the future.

In a country like Britain with very dense populations per square mile, there is a limited amount of land available for construction. The land between built up areas of the villages and towns is known as Green Belt and is protected from development to preserve the agricultural and natural heritage which is vital to the economy of the country.

The outcome of this policy is that there is a constant shortage of land for housing and industry, so the developers have to be more creative when providing structures for the population. One of the ways of doing this is to find places where the buildings are no longer commercially viable or have been abandoned, and re-use the area for different purposes. These areas are known as brownfield, or greyfield sites. In some cities, particularly Leeds and Manchester, the old warehouses or factories have been converted into apartments, retaining the original shell and reconfiguring the internal dimensions into valuable living accommodation.

Brownfield sites are disused industrial and commercial facilities where the land may be contaminated with hazardous waste or pollution. They are potentially valuable for significant redevelopment once they have been cleaned up. Greyfield sites are urban properties that have been underutilised or abandoned, but do not have the environmental issues of brownfield sites. They were termed greyfield sites because of large areas of asphalt that covered the land. These sites are valuable because they already have the infrastructure such as water, sewage, electricity and gas in place and do not need remedial work to utilise the site.

When a structure is to be removed there are different ways of approaching the task. The size and construction of the building, the new use of the site and whether there are valuable elements suitable for re-use, will all determine how it is to be demolished.

Traditional Demolition

Traditionally, once all the services were disconnected, the machinery and men would go in and just knock down the walls which caused the roof to collapse and then drag all the wreckage away. Any concrete hard standing would be broken up ready for removal. The site would be cleared of rubbish and disposed of in landfill sites. However modern demolition practices are very controlled and are subject to strict planning, safety and monitoring regulations.

Small structures such as two or three storey houses can be dismantled quite easily with hydraulic excavators and bulldozers using an undermining process. The walls are undermined at the base, in order to topple the structure; at the same time the manner and direction of the fall is controlled. Clean-up and safety issues are also taken into account when deciding how the building will be undermined and demolished.

Larger buildings such as tower blocks and chimneys require more specialist techniques, and are outlined below.

Deconstruction

A new approach to demolishing buildings is deconstruction - a green approach. The aim is to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill sites by carefully preserving valuable materials for reuse. The work may be a painstaking task of dismantling by hand - brick by brick - or beam by beam. The reclaimed materials are then recycled or re-used for future buildings. The results of deconstruction can save in excess of 90% waste from going to a landfill site. When the farmer opposite to my house sold his farm yard with barns for housing, the builder demolished the barns, cleaned up the bricks and reused them for the perimeter wall of the farmhouse. At the time I was looking for some rubble as a base for a path and the builder let me take several barrow loads off his pile.

Recycling

Historically when old buildings were ruined from disuse or war damage the local people would gradually remove the stone and use it to build their new structures such as houses or barns. Hadrian’s wall between Carlisle and Newcastle has mostly gone because after the Romans left, the local population made off with the beautifully dressed stone the Roman craftsmen had used in the building of the wall. So even in those days people understood the value of recycling because it was much cheaper than having to quarry and dress the stone themselves.

At one time the rubble resulting from a demolished building would be taken to a landfill site for disposal. Now however concrete can be rapidly broken up with the latest machine called a guillotine and the resultant rubble can be crushed and used as sub-base material for the foundation of the new building which is to replace the old, or sent to other construction sites. These days this crushed rubble is called 6f2 crushed stone or 6f2 crushed material.

Modern machinery and techniques allows the demolition companies to efficiently segregate waste types on or off-site. Wherever possible construction materials are recycled and re-used in the new structure. Recycling of waste contributes to a significant savings in project costs and is good for the environment.

When we renovated our bungalow 20 years ago the builder, who was a bell ringer, found an old beam from a bell tower that was being renovated, and after carefully treating it, installed it in the kitchen. It gave the room some badly needed character and has never needed any further treatment.

Copper pipes, wiring, roof tiles or slates, floor tiles and doors, and wood panelling are some of the valuable items that are saved for recycling and re-use. There are specialist yards in many towns where reclaimed old or antique artefacts are available for purchase.

Tall Buildings

The demolition of tall buildings requires expert techniques. In some cases a wrecking ball on a crane may be used to demolish the top part of a tall building until it is down to a manageable height. However this process is rarely used due to the uncontrollable factor of the swinging ball and the proximity of other buildings.

Other methods of demolition of tall buildings are by implosion using explosives, controlled collapse and piecemeal. Also ‘High Reach’ demolition excavators are used where explosives are not possible. Once the building is down to a more manageable height demolition continues in the usual way.

The steeplejack Fred Dibnah became famous in the late 1970’s for his work on demolishing tall chimneys without the need for explosives. He would cut an ingress at the base of the chimney, use wooden props to support the brickwork and then burn the props so that the chimney toppled hopefully in the right direction.

The tallest building to be lawfully demolished was the Singer Building of New York in 1967/8. More recently the collapse of the World Trade Centre after the 9/11 attack in 2001 shows the terrible devastation that could occur if the demolition is not controlled and very carefully contained.

In the demolishing of tall buildings and large structures water hoses and spray equipment is used to control the dust and would is termed a wet demolition.

Explosions

What comes to mind for many people when they think about demolition would be the dramatic collapse of a tall building using explosives. However it is usually the process of implosion, using explosives, that brings down a tall building so that it does as little damage as possible to the surrounding environment. Implosion is essential for dense urban areas and is very fast, the collapse taking only seconds, with the building falling inwards into its own footprint.

Using explosives is specialist work and is a very skilled process and getting it wrong can be catastrophic. If an implosion is not prepared correctly the danger may be damage to neighbouring structures or even killing onlookers from flying debris. Even more dangerous is a partial collapse of a building where the remaining structure is unstable and there are still primed explosives that failed to go off. Workers are in great danger if or when continuing the demolition.

Other hazards of working with explosives occurs when the atmospheric pressure from low cloud above the implosion site will cause the shockwave to spread outwards instead of upwards. The wave of energy and sound created will break windows and cause other damage to the surrounding buildings.

Because of the dangers of working with explosives, implosion will only be used when other methods are too costly or impractical.

Health and Safety

Demolition of any building is highly dangerous and is a much more complicated and technical process than most people would realise. Experienced and skilled operators are essential to ensure safety for both workers and public alike. The stability of any structure is reliant on the interdependence of its component parts, so an incorrect sequence of dismantling could result in a premature collapse.

Health and safety is paramount in demolition work so personnel working in the industry have to be thoroughly trained. It is advisable for operatives to have gained a Certificate of Competence in Demolition to ensure they have the necessary skills and safety awareness. All demolition work is regulated by the Construction, Design and Management Regulations.

Sequence of Demolition

There has to be a sequence of actions before any demolition can take place. Each area council will have their own specific list for planning approval, but a typical order would be as follows:-

  • Provision of Information
The demolition company must provide information about the construction to be demolished, its previous use and the appropriate demolition method to be applied including disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Survey of Demolition
Identification of any structural problems as well as risks associated with hazardous or flammable substances will require a thorough survey of the site. (E.g. Where petrol has been stored, ie disused garage, precautions need to be taken to prevent a fire hazard).
  • Preferred and Safe Method of Work
A reputable company involved in demolition will be able to select the appropriate method of disposal. Planning and outlining the dismantling process is necessary for meticulous monitoring. A detailed statement outlining the safety process needs to be agreed by all parties involved before any demolition can take place.
  • Preparation and Planning
There is a lot of preparation to be done before starting work on demolishing the building itself. Issues such as asbestos abatement, disconnecting utilities, rodent baiting, dealing with hazardous substances and making safe any electric, gas or other services have to be resolved.
  • Protection of the Public
Where demolition is carried out in heavily populated areas the protection of the public is paramount. Safety cannot be compromised. Temporary services may need to be arranged, health hazards assessed and people inconvenienced will need to be informed.

Conclusion

The word ‘demolish’ is interpreted as the deliberate and controlled collapse of a structure. Demolition work is a very dangerous business and demolishing any building is a complex and skilled process. The aim in demolition is to remove an unwanted building as safely and quickly as possible, recycle or re-use most of the old material, and clear the site ready for the subsequent use.

In the centre of Nottingham over the last few years there has been a major reconstruction of what was an old car park into a brand new shopping centre. While this was going on the public were only really aware of the boarding around the area, a change in traffic direction and maybe some big lorries going in and out of the site.

So the next time you see structures being demolished to make way for the new, give a thought to the company involved who’s team are daily working in a dangerous environment, adhering to all of the regulations and carefully and meticulously carrying out the project to bring us the modern conveniences we have come to expect and clearing the way for the future.

I’m finding that it is possible to download some great software tools to help improve my efficiency at work and at home. Some are free and some aren’t. In particular I am thinking about the importance of antivirus software for my computer.

I’ve had the occasional virus over the years, and it can totally ruin hundreds of files and cause very significant losses. Even the more benign viruses can slow you down. So I’ve determined to make sure I always have updated antivirus protection on all my computers.

The thing is, there are a number of good free programs you can download to obtain solid virus protection. I’ve come to learn that the free software does the trick, but I need to also install additional software to protect against trojan horses and adware.

Although usually not as dangerous as a true virus attack, your computer can get really slow if there are thousands of cookies and other gremlins interfering with its operation. The free antivirus software will likely not protect as well against all the internet marauders; so it might be best (and fastest) to buy a modestly priced package like Avast! or Norton.

Finally, as the business world leans towards a paperless environment, there is the need to be able to consolidate and organize all types of files from hundreds of software applications. We’ll likely find more and more the need to convert spreadsheets, text files and photographs to pdf format.

Of course, Adobe is the Big Dog in this field, with a number of other players as well. Adobe Acrobat is probably the best-known software package and there are a few choices of exactly which product in that family you choose. If your needs are very basic, you might be able to get away with the free Adobe Reader. That is pretty limiting though, and I’ve found that I need something that will let me work with the files rather than just read, save, send and print them.

Whichever file management software you select, you’ll find that there are significant time savings in being able to quickly work with pdf files. I suspect this is only going to become more prevalent in the future.

If you run a small business but do not have a website, the chances are you are thinking about getting one. All your competitors seem to have one, and your customers seem surprised that you do not. Every time you advertise your business you are asked to enter your website address, but you keep putting off doing anything about getting one. In the back of your mind the main questions are ‘Why do I need a website? Will it really benefit my business? How much will it cost me?’

Here are a few of the major benefits to small businesses of having a website:

1. Customer convenience

Today, people are used to having instant information at their fingertips twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. A website can provide all the facts they need, whenever they need them. If your customers have to wait until your office is open and pick up the phone to get details about your business, the chances are they will go to someone else.

2. Time saving

How much time do you spend answering simple queries about your business, or providing standard details to prospective customers? Once your website is up and running it can do most of this work for you, allowing you more time on your product and services, or on developing your business.

3. Competitive edge

Customers that use a directory, either on or off-line, to search for a product or service, are far more likely to choose a business that has a website over one that has not. This is because they can access immediate information about that company without having to make a call or write a letter. If you can not list a website address along with your business details, you are giving your competitors an edge.

4. Effective advertising

A fully optimized website, which can easily be found through online directories or search engines, is an extremely efficient form of advertising. The costs are relatively low compared to traditional methods such as placing an ad in a trade magazine, and can reach a far wider audience for a longer period of time. There is no better advertisement for your business than a well written, easy to use, customer focussed website.

5. Cutting down administration

A website can save you a vast amount of money on printed materials such as brochures and product literature. It can also be easily updated, without the need to dispose of out-of-date printed materials and order new ones. Mistakes on a website can be rectified with far less trouble than on a printed brochure. A website can be a great way to communicate new product information and special offers to your customers.

And finally to the question of cost …

While it is true that having a professional site built from scratch can be very expensive, and learning the skills to build a site yourself is very time consuming, there are alternatives. Look for companies like Web Design West Midlands that specialise in creating websites for small businesses based on standard templates. These can be tailored to suit your particular needs with content and images provided by you. For an affordable price, which means that you can have cheap website design and a fully functioning website up and running, and providing valuable information to your customers, within a few weeks.

Imagine the next time you join a discussion about email broker. When you start sharing the fascinating email broker facts below, your friends will be absolutely amazed.

Last time I checked, there were 25,000 reply lists and fifty thousand assembled lists now on the market. Locating the best names for your mailing is difficult and best left to a professional list brokerage. A list broker is a consultant who researches and advises lists for you, and manages all the bureaucracy and other details of leasing the list. Negotiates the best costs for you with the list owner.

Makes sure the list gets to your lettershop on time. You describe your organization’s mission, including what you do and who you help. You describe your ideal donor like female, fifty five years old, married, owns home, $150,000 household earnings, cares about animal welfare, lives in the U. S.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on email broker now have at least a basic understanding. But there’s more to come.

And replies to direct mail fundraising appeals from animal rights organizations. The list broker prepares your list and sends it to your lettershop or service bureau. Your lettershop keys your reply device and other parts so you can track the outcome of this mailing back to this list.

You mail your package to the names on the list. You process each donation you receive, adding the names to your database ( they are yours to keep ), and flagging each new donor record to note the package and list used to obtain the donor. An elect is a method the list broker conducts for you to select only some names from the whole list. So working with a professional email marketing list broker is imperative.
